Hi there and welcome to our Brits on a Roll. We make hand crafted sausage rolls.
Our story started 2 years after my husband moved to the U.S. He had two years of eating Louisiana holiday food, and he was missing the holiday food of the UK. The two things he missed the most were mince pies and sausage rolls.
Now you should know that I love cooking for my family, and I prefer to make what I can instead of buying things premade. I prefer to have the least number of preservatives as possible. I am a Louisiana girl, and food is my love language to my family.
So, I did what most home cooks do, I Googled a lot until I found a genuinely British recipe. Conversions and such were a challenge, but I was able to produce a pretty decent sausage roll.
They became a staple at Christmas, and we would get requests from friends to make them for other parties. I have tried to make them several different ways. Sometimes I would use premade pastry or try different seasonings for the sausage. Then I started to experiment with different sausage types, other than the traditional pork. The evolution of our sausage rolls has been an experiment in flavor and texture and lots of trial and error.
It has been 13 years since the first time I made a sausage roll, and after all the reboots and test runs, I created the pastry recipe and the sausage recipe that makes my husband say, “You don’t have anything this good anymore. I can never find anything as good as what you can make at home.”
We love these rolls so much, we wanted to share them with all of you. We hope they will not only be comforting to our fellow Brits in Texas that are looking for a taste of home, but that everyone else will love them just as much. They are truly made with love. – Annette Leat
